Lakeshore / SF Zoo

Published by Chad On June 5, 2017

To the southwest is the quiet neighborhood of Lakeshore. There are lots of places for adventuring nature here, a good stretch of Pacific coast beach, the freshwater Lake Merced, Fort Funston, and multiple golf courses. This is also where you will find the San Francisco Zoo, home to over 1000 exotic animals.

Getting here

While this may be best traveled on a day you have the rental car, you can still get to the Lakeshore area using public transportation.

Highlights

The San Francisco Zoo: 100 acres of beautifully maintained park. The SF Zoo has 250 species, new and exciting exhibits and a huge children’s playground.

TPC Harding Park: One of three golf courses in Lakeshore, TPC Harding Park is the only club open to the public.

Fort Funston: Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, former military defense installation now provides loads of outdoor activities. There are many trails for hiking and horseback riding and it’s a well known hang-gliding spot, with a launch area.

Nearby Points of Interest

Ocean Beach: Play in the surf and explore the coastline! Located at the western end of Golden Gate Park.

Golden Gate Park: Where else can you see carnivorous plants, a herd of bison, centuries-old artwork, and year-round concerts? Golden Gate Park has something to offer everyone. Rent a paddleboat on Stow Lake, bike on a surrey around the park, or take a Segway tour and learn the park’s history. Whatever activity you choose, you are sure to have a blast!
