With the closure and demolition of Bayview’s biggest draw, the outdoor sport’s stadium Candlestick Park, it is now an up and coming primarily residential area. Clean up of Naval Shipyard lands in this southeast San Francisco Bayside area is providing new space for residential and commercial development.
Getting Here
Connected to the Downtown area by the SFMTA Muni light rail T line making Bayview accessible from anywhere in the city.
Highlights
Candlestick Point State Recreation Area: a 170 acre protected State Park. Candlestick Point offers picnic areas, fishing piers, and hiking. It is also a popular windsurfing launch.
San Francisco Shipyard Redevelopment: An ongoing clean-up and construction project. Removal of toxic military waste, land redevelopment, and community planning are bringing condominiums to this former Naval Shipyard.
Bayview Opera House: Although the sign above the door still reads “South San Francisco Opera House” from the original 1888 built performance house, it was renamed the “Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre” in 1995. There has never actually been an Opera performed here, it has served as community center, available for music concerts, comedy appearances, art performances and cultural exhibitions.
